Happy Thursday, South Philly.
In this week’s Scoop …
A critically-acclaimed East Passyunk restaurant is searching for a new home
We’re just two weeks away from major changes to a few SEPTA bus routes
The Federal Donuts on South Street is abruptly closed just weeks after owners said it would stay open
A vital I-95 on-ramp is going to be closed until when?!
But first …
Acme begins to take its history as a prison literally 🔒
The Acme on East Passyunk Avenue infamously sits on land that used to be Moyamensing Prison, a hulking medieval-looking structure that housed serial killers and petty thieves alike.
Now, decades later, everybody trying to shop at the grocery store that calls that land home gets to feel like they’re a petty thief too.
The store — along with other South Philly Acme stores in Pennsport and on Oregon Avenue — has installed security gates around not just the self-checkout lanes, but also in each of the traditional checkout lanes. The gates require a receipt to be scanned before they open and let you free to take your overpriced chicken home.
A few gripes about this, if you’ll indulge …
