Plus, the park at 3rd and Shunk is set to reopen and it is absolutely beautiful.

Happy Thursday, South Philly.

It’s a holiday weekend and the unofficial start of summer, even if the weather won’t reflect it. In town, it’s a huge weekend of major concerts in the Sports Complex — Metallica, Post Malone, and Barry Manilow all come in this weekend.

Otherwise, as holiday weekends usually go in the city in the summer, it’s a little quieter — especially coming off the heels of Italian Market Festival, South Street Maifest, and Flavors on the Avenue the last few weekends.

In this week’s Scoop …

  • Did you vote on Tuesday? Odds are that you didn’t.

  • The ribbon was cut on updates to Murphy Rec Center in the Whitman neighborhood and it’s probably the nicest park in South Philly now. Pics below.

  • We have fresh details on six different business openings and closing this week. May is a busy month in this department!

Voter turnout was abysmal this week 🫥

Did you know there was an election this week?

It seems that most of our neighbors didn’t, or maybe they just didn’t care — but only 20% of South Philadelphia’s registered voters turned out to vote in the primaries that were held on Tuesday.

Hey, at least that’s better than the city as a whole. Only 16.35% of all registered voters in Philadelphia voted in the election — which, considering the city’s Democratic Party lean, will likely lead to Larry Krasner’s re-election to a third term as DA.

There weren’t many other major or competitive races on either side of the aisle.

We were asked to pick a bunch of judges — Pennsylvania is one of only eight states in the country to hold partisan elections for judges. These are basically impossible to be informed about, as there are dozens of candidates and very little reputable research available about any of them. But that’s about it.

Below is a breakdown of how each ward in South Philly turned out. For a division-by-division look, which allows you to see how the couple-hundred of your nearest neighbors voted, you can find your ward on this page and click Ward-Division.
