Happy Thursday, South Philly.

We’re definitely in the late-July, early-August summer slowdown — but if you’re one of the few, the proud staying around the city on these quieter weekends, there’s still plenty to do and new places to try before your friends all get back from the shore.

In this week’s Scoop …

  • They built hundreds of apartments in the Navy Yard, saying it’s South Philly’s next great neighborhood. And the (very few) residents go out for dinner at the Courtyard Marriott. More on that inside.

  • A new bar is setting up shop on a recently-vacated corner in Point Breeze

  • It’s a big weekend for free events around South Philly, starting with two big ones …

Two festivals to enjoy this weekend 🎊

South Philly's got a one-two punch of free festivals this weekend, so clear your Friday and your Saturday, and hope for some nice weather.

It kicks off with Night Out on 9th: Night Market, back on South Street this Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., between 9th and 11th Streets.

Expect local artists, vintage goods, and small businesses hawking jewelry, candles, and handmade products. You can also enjoy food and drink from a ton of great local spots, plus live music, family activities, a kicking challenge with the Philadelphia Union, and a chance to meet Bailey, the PPD's new crisis response pup. A perfect Friday night out.

Then, on Saturday, the party heads to the bottom of Broad for Philly Free Fest at the Navy Yard's Marine Parade Grounds, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
