Happy Thursday, South Philly.

In this week’s Scoop …

  • A major project in the Italian Market is finally making progress.

  • We’re days from the opening of a new grocer at Broad and Snyder.

  • It’s last call for a Grays Ferry dive bar.

  • And South Philly recovers from the microburst.

But first, our top story this week …

Uneven enforcement on South Street ⚠️

Tattooed Mom, the eccentric South Street bar and event space, is featured nearly every week on our South Philly events calendar (including this week, see below!).

But they posted to social media on July 11 saying that, since late March, the city has stopped them from hosting live performance events.

Violations posted online by L&I show that the business was fined earlier this year for not holding a special occupancy license β€” which is generally needed for any business that hosts a performance event of 50+ people β€” as well as for a variety of other items such as improper storage.

Permitting and zoning is important in any functioning city, and TMoms absolutely needs to abide by the rules and operate with the appropriate licensing. Similar bar/event spaces such as the Dolphin on South Broad or Nikki Lopez a few blocks over on South have active special occupancy licenses, per phila.gov.

But the question here is really about the uneven standard of enforcement.
